THE annual Good Friday walk of witness through Bury town centre was blessed with sunshine as more than 100 worshippers joined the procession.

Among those who took part in the march, which saw a large wooden cross carried through the streets, was the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Sharon Briggs, and the mayoress, Shirley Rabbitt.

Worshippers paused at locations en route for hymns and readings before the walk concluded at St Marie’s RC Church in Manchester Road, Bury. The event was organised by Churches Together in Bury.

Walkers initially met outside Bury United Reformed Church (URC) in Parsons Lane before the procession began.

The Rev Ruth Wollaston, minister at Bury URC, said: “The walk of witness went very well indeed and I estimate that more than 100 people from all different churches took part.

“We had such a lovely day with sunshine.”

The procession travelled down Tithebarn Street on to The Rock where it halted briefly for readings and hymns with a similar pause at Bury Parish Church.

“We finished up at St Marie’s RC Church where the wooden cross was placed in the garden, which is tradition,” added the reverend.

On Sunday, the minister was among a smaller group of worshippers who said prayers on The Rock while holding Easter Sunday posters.

She explained: “This was to show that Good Friday is followed by the joy of Easter.”
