A MAN has been killed after he was hit by a tram in Prestwich.
The 33-year-old died after he was struck by a tram near Prestwich tram station at about 1.30pm.
The Prestwich Metrolink Station remains shut by police, with fire and ambulance crews having now left the scene.
A reduced tram service is currently running and motorists and tram passengers are being urged to avoid the area where possible.
It was expected the fire service's special response unit would lift the tram, but instead police are currently rolling it from the track.
Metrolink services are currently operating between Bury and Whitefield and tram passes from Prestwich into the city centre can be used on the 135 and 98 buses.
One passerby, who did not wish to be named, said: "It is horrible.
"We were outside the stop when it happened and we saw a woman run out of the tram stop screaming and crying."
Anyone with information can call police on 0161 8564742.
