WORK on a new £1 million sixth form centre at Bury Grammar School Girls is under way.

The centre, which is sited at the front of the girls school in Bridge Road, will be used by students from both the girls and boys schools.

A number of old classrooms have been removed to make way for the new centre, which will include study and recreational areas as well as a cafe.

Structural work began during the last summer holidays, and Accrington-based Rosslee Construction will undertake the work.

It is hoped that the centre will be ready by September for the new term.

Headmistress Bobby Georghiou, said: “We have been planning for it for many years now and it is the result of many generous donations to our school.

“Nearly £1 million pounds has been raised to complete the centre and it is exciting to think that boys and girls will be sharing the building just as they did in the early days of our school.”

Isabel Waite, aged 16, who will be the school’s head girl for the next school year, added: “It will be a bit of a change but having a nice new common room will be great. There will be a quiet space for work and a space to socialise, which will be useful.”
