Kind-hearted boss replaces eight-year-old's stolen chickens

Bury Times: Zac Barnes hasn’t stopped smiling since he was given some replacement chickens. Zac Barnes hasn’t stopped smiling since he was given some replacement chickens.

AN eight-year-old boy is crowing with pride over his new pets just days after fowl thieves stole his 10 cockerels and chickens.

Touched by the plight of Zac Barnes after reading about the theft in the Bury Times, a drainage company arranged for the youngster to choose replacements for the stolen fowl at a poultry farm in Blackpool.

Now, the 10 young chicks are being cared for by the delighted youngster.

Jane Horridge, owner of the firm, which she asked to remain anonymous, said: “Myself and the lads here really felt for the little lad when we read the story.

His father, Chris, says Zac hasn’t stopped smiling since he got the new chickens.”

Last week, the Bury Times told how raiders struck at the boy’s home in Brandlesholme Road and took away the cockerels and chickens in cages from the back garden.

Zac, who had lovingly looked after them for two years, was left heartbroken by the theft, but it prompted several kind offers from people wishing to help.

Father Chris said: “Thanks to the Bury company, we went to Blackpool and Zac was able to pick out 10 new chickens. He’s over the moon and very happy. We would like to thank the firm for their kindness.”

Zac has also received a specially-built poultry pen which was donated by another reader who was moved by his story.

Good news that they have been replaced but can't help wondering why anyone would want to steal chickens and cockerels? Why would you bother?

Perhaps they were noisy especially in the morning. Not everyone wants to be woken up to the sound of a cockerel?
