HOLLINS residents have lost their fight to stop a “narrow” road being used to access a new housing site.

Morris Homes has asked Bury Council for permission to build 21 houses on The Hollins site, off Haweswater Crescent.

A total of 26 people formally objected: some were against the idea altogether, while others said they had no objection to the houses being built, as long as the proposal to allow vehicles to access the site from Haweswater Crescent was scrapped.

They said Haweswater Crescent is a narrow side street and had traffic-calming measures, which demonstrated there was already a problem with traffic — and the housing would make it worse.

Some also claimed the road gets icy in the winter, making driving treacherous.

Bury planning committee voted five to two in favour of granting permission without any amended conditions on the proposed access.

A report to the committee said: “The existing traffic-calming measures on Haweswater Crescent would be revised.

“There would be levels of visibility at the junction of the new access with Haweswater Crescent and the traffic section has no objections to the proposal.”

When work is finished, the firm must spend £71,847 on improving recreation in the area.
