TODAY is a sparkling occasion for Bury couple Harry and June Smith, who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

They tied the knot at St John’s Church on The Rock in Bury on June 12, 1954.

Harry and June, of Halstead Street, Chesham, are both aged 83, have two daughters and four grandchildren.

They first met at the Palais de Dance in Bury where partners on the dance floor subsequently became partners for life.

Both Harry and June were born locally.

Harry served more than five years with the RAF as a chef and later worked as a coach driver and lorry driver before his retirement.

June worked at a slipper factory in Bury.

The couple, who have been keen walkers and gardeners, enjoyed a family gathering at Bamford’s Crimble restaurant on Sunday to mark their diamond wedding anniversary.

Commenting on their last 60 years together, Harry said: “It’s a long time when we look back.”
