A WOMAN had to be rescued by firefighters after following her pet dog down an embankment.

The dog lover was walking her pet in Drinkwater Park off Agecroft Road in Prestwich when the animal wandered off towards the water at 3.45pm today.

The dog's owner went down an embankment to retrieve her pet but was then unable to get back up.

Fire officers from the specialist water incident unit based in Heywood were called to the scene and managed to pull the woman and her dog to safety a short time afterwards.
