A “GRAND” garden party saw more than £1,000 donated to a newly relaunched charity which helps people who are deaf and hearing impaired.

Old Hall Park Residents Association in Whitefield held its annual open garden event to raise funds for three causes: Communic8te Bury, Grace’s Place children’s hospice and Bury Cancer Support Centre.

In total, more than £3,400 was raised at the ninth annual event with Yvonne Moore, from Hey Croft, once again throwing open the gates of her prize-winning garden for the public to enjoy.

More than 200 people enjoyed refreshments, homemade cakes, plant stalls, a jewellery stall by Bling and a tombola.

Yvonne said: “Ten years ago we won best back garden in Bury and people asked us if they could see our garden — it snowballed from there.

“In nine years, we have raised nearly £20,000 for charity. It was very successful, not just because of the fundraising, but because it brought the community together.”

Communic8te chairman Peter Ashworth said: “Everyone would like to thank Yvonne and everyone involved for providing such a tremendous event and for supporting local charities with such wonderful enthusiasm.”

Communic8te Bury relaunched in May after being formed by the merger of Bury Deaf Children’s Society and Bury Society for Deaf and Hearing Impaired People.

Earlier this year, Yvonne was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to Bury’s community and she was selected as Bury Woman of the Year in 2009.
