CARE service providers in Bury are aiming to reduce the number of accidental falls suffered by older people.

Residents are being invited to a Falls Prevention Awareness Day next Wednesday at Textile Hall, Manchester Road, Bury, from 10am to 4pm.

The event will provide information and support around the most common causes of falls, such as dehydration, poor vision, hearing impairments, incorrect footwear or foot problems, and incorrect medicines.

Statistics show that every year, one in three people over the age of 65 will have a fall, and Age UK says that falls and fractures for people in that age category account for more than four million hospital bed days each year in England.

Adult Care Connect and Direct workers have joined the Bury falls prevention team, Millercare mobility specialist, Communic8te, podiatry and chiropody services, and opticians to provide more support.

A Bury Council spokesman said: “We invite people to come along and find out more about how they can help themselves or someone they love stay safe in their own home.

“Falls can cause not only loss of mobility, but loss of independence and confidence, and could lead to more serious health issues.”

The meeting will include light refreshments and give visitors the chance to chat with like-minded people.
