SEVERAL schools throughout Bury will be forced to close their gates to pupils next Tuesday (Oct 14) during a strike by non-teaching staff.
The industrial action is being taken by members of Unison, Unite and GMB unions over an ongoing national pay dispute with the Government.
Castlebrook High School in Unsworth and Millwood School in Radcliffe have already indicated they will be shut. Philips and Elms Bank high schools in Whitefield will also close while St Monica's High School in Prestwich will be partially shut. However, many schools will remain open.
In a letter to parents referring to the forthcoming strike action, Castlebrook High headteacher Mr Tony Roberts said: "Unfortunately, as a consequence I have to notify you that after taking into account the impact of the action upon safeguarding the health and safety of children, Castlebrook High School will be closed to all learners on Tuesday.
"I recognise that this may well create some difficulties for you and your family but hope that this early notification will help you make alternative arrangements."
Local government workers say they have been forced to endure a three-year pay freeze followed by a below inflation pay deal and have been offered a proposed one per cent pay rise.
The dispute has apparently reached stalemate with no further talks scheduled between the Government and representatives of the unions.
Parents are being informed by their individual schools whether they will remain fully open, partially closed, or fully shut down for the day
At this stage, it is not known how many schools will operate as normal.
