THE sky is the limit for a social club eager to adapt with the times while maintaining its illustrious history.

St Mary’s Catholic Social Club in Pine Street, Radcliffe was founded more than 100 years ago and is the last club of its kind in the town.

It gained international recognition in 2009 after Radcliffe-born Danny Boyle – whose father, Frank is an ex-chairman of the club – namedropped it in his Oscar acceptance speech for Slumdog Millionaire.

Danny, who regularly visited St Mary’s with his dad in his youth, returned several days later to show off his Oscar and found swarms of media and fans waiting outside.

The club’s committee have recently spent thousands to breathe new life into the club in order to attract new customers after nearly folding three years ago.

Sky Sports has been installed in the hope the people of Radcliffe will come down to watch football matches and other sporting events on the large screen.

Chairman Peter Turner said: “We want to bring more life back into the club so have put in a few new features which will help get things going and attract new members.

“As well as now showing Sky Sports on the big screen we have redecorated the games room and installed a new pool table as well as renovating the main room and repairing the roof.

“We have been in Radcliffe for more than 100 years now. St Mary’s is the last club of its kind in Radcliffe, and we are determined to keep it alive.”
