SOME of the UK’s best folk artists have released an album to mark the World War One centenary — and will kick off their national tour in Bury.

The group of award-winning musicians, whose album 'Songs for the Voiceless' was released yesterday, will perform tracks from the album at The Met on November 5.

They will then embark on a week-long UK tour in the build-up to Remembrance Sunday on November 9.

The album was inspired by poems, diaries, memoirs and books from World War One and some of the songs were inspired by the artists’ ancestors.

Amongst the performers will be former winner of the Horizon Award Jackie Oates, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Folk Singer of the Year Bella Hardy and 2013 Folk Awards Best Duo nominees Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts.

Group member Michael J Tinker said: “There are so many First World War stories to tell and with the passing of time more and more will be lost. Our aim was to use song to bring some of these stories to a wider public.

"We wanted to tell the tales of real people, whatever their opinions of the war, with all the passions and emotions they might have felt."

All proceeds from the albumsale will go to The Poppy Appeal.

The gig at The Met will start at 8pm in the venue’s Main Theatre. Tickets cost £14 for adults and £12 for concessions.
