RESIDENTS turned out in droves to line the street and pay their respects to fallen soldiers during the Ramsbottom's Remembrance Sunday commemoration.

The Royal British Legion standard bearers were accompanied by a lone piper along with representatives from the Army, Naval and Air cadets and the police, fire and ambulance services. Also taking part were local Scouts and Royal British Legion members.

The parade marched from Ramsbottom Royal British Legion Club through the streets of Ramsbottom to the cenotaph outside St Paul’s Church on Bridge Street where they were met by more than 1,000 local people who had gathered along the streets.

A wreath laying ceremony took place, the Reverend Anthony Barnshaw officiating, followed by the annual Remembrance Day service inside St Paul’s Church.

After the service, the parade reformed and made its way back along Bridge Street through the streets of Ramsbottom to its final destination, outside the Ramsbottom Royal British Legion. There, parade marshal Mr Colin Grundy, dismissed the parade after thanks were given from the dignitaries attending.

The standard bearers and escorts then attended the annual Remembrance Day parade and service at Voith Fabrics, formerly Porritts Mill at Stubbins where a short service took place to remember those mill employees who died in the two World Wars. They are remembered on a war memorial in the mill grounds.

A spokesman for the Royal British Legion paid a huge thanks to the large numbers who supported the parade.

Elsewhere, generations came together in Summerseat to pay their respects.

A service was held at Rowlands Road Methodist Church, and following the two-minute silence, wreaths were laid at the village memorial in the church grounds.

Among those laying the tributes were 91-year-old Jean Sharples, and Jack Fairclough, aged 17, the oldest and youngest members of the church. Jack represents Team GB at shooting (clay pigeon and skeet) and is a medal hope for future Olympics.

In Tottington, a service was held at St Anne's Church at 10.30am with wreaths laid at the war memorial in the church. This was followed at 3pm by a service at the war memorial in Market Street.
