A RAMSBOTTOM school has been declared "outstanding" following a glowing report from diocesan inspectors.

St Joseph's RC Primary School was given the grade in all areas of the school's inspection by officials from the Diocese of Salford, in a report which assesses the religious aspect of the school's curriculum.

Inspectors found that pupils receive "exceptional" teaching and that the leadership of the school is "outstanding".

The report, which is separate from Ofsted and focuses on the spiritual and religious aspect of the school's provision, said its spiritual, moral, social and cultural education was outstanding.

It read: "St Joseph's is led by a dedicated and inspirational headteacher with the help of a very competent leadership team.

"Leadership, including governors, places Religious Education at the centre of the curriculum and ensures that spiritual leadership is outstanding.

"The governing body is extremely pro-active and committed to continual school improvement and its own effectiveness."

Examples of a positive ethos at the school included its "buddy" system, which pairs year 6 and reception pupils to ensure the young children are adjusting into school life, and the Rainbows scheme, with two members of staff being trained to offer support to children suffering from loss or a bereavement.

A letter addressed to pupils from inspectors following the visit read: "You and your teachers are working so hard to always do your very best and as a result your school is outstanding.

"Your knowledge and understanding of the school’s culture statement is very impressive. We saw examples of love, faith and hope in all that you do around school. Your school is a very happy, caring and joyful place."

Headteacher Mr Jim Graves added: "I feel that it shows the hard work and wonderful attitude of our children, and the dedication and huge effort from all of our staff and governors.

"I am proud of our whole school community."
