STUDENTS from Bury set out to raise the awareness of human trafficking at the first public appearance of the Church of England's first female bishop.

Holy Cross College's 4C charities group visited Manchester Airport as part of the Travel Safe initiative, designed to highlight the evils of human trafficking, forced marriage and exploitation.

The event also heralded the inaugural public appearance of the Bishop of Stockport, Libby Lane, who recently became the church's first female bishop.

The students spent the day handing out leaflets and talking to people about the issues.

Ms Ellen Tench, head of theology and philosophy at the college, said: "As part of the campaign, students spent the day handing leaflets to staff and passengers.

"They approached the whole experience with maturity and good humour, as not everyone they encountered was necessarily open to consider the issue.

"Human Trafficking is the second largest illegal trade in today’s world, and the students thought it was important to take part in some social action regarding the issue."
