SCARVES were the order of the day at a fundraising evening which raised £250 for people who are deaf and have hearing impairments.

A scarf demonstration evening – showcasing the different ways to tie a scarf – was held at All Saints’ Church in Whitefield last week in aid of Communic8te Bury.

The money raised at the event, organised by the Inner Wheel Club of Prestwich and Whitefield, will provide services for people in Bury who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Betty Hayworth, president of the club, presented a cheque to Christine Quayle, Lisa Anderson and Lydia Mikes from Communic8te.

She said: “My mother was deaf and I wanted to help local people, who are often overlooked. I know that the money will be put to good use to achieve this.”

Communic8te, based in Tenterden Street, Bury, relaunched last May following the merger of Bury Deaf Children’s Society and Bury Society for Deaf and Hearing Impaired People.

Sue Furby, fundraising co-ordinator, said: “As a registered charity, our work is completely reliant on donations and fundraising activities.

“We are so grateful to Betty for organising the event and the people who kindly supported her.

“The money will help us to set up new groups for families and the elderly, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation in the community.”

Communic8te is one of the ‘Chosen by You’ charities for Asda in Bury and Radcliffe during March and April, and there will be collections at Asda in Bury on May 1 and 2.

Volunteers will also be manning a fundraising stall in the Mill Gate Centre this Easter.

Charity leaders are also currently inviting members of the public to submit their photographs of Bury before June 30 to be used for a fundraising calendar for 2016.
