WEDDING bells chimed and confetti was thrown as one happy couple walked down by the aisle watched by proud friends and family.

At this particular wedding, however, the couple in question were too young to be joined in holy matrimony.

Year one and two pupils at Elton Primary School took part in a mock wedding ceremony at St James’ Church as part of their religious education studies.

Youngsters from France Class undertook different roles, from bride and groom to wedding photographers, and even a chimney sweep.

The service was conducted by the vicar of the church in Walshaw Road, Reverend Simon Cook.

Tony Emmott, headteacher at Elton Primary, said: “It was great to see so many parents and grandparents at the service, especially making the effort to dress for the wedding.”

Following the church service, the newly-weds hosted a reception at the school in Alston Street.

After the traditional speeches, they were served lunch by year six pupils before a celebration disco for all key stage one children and staff in the afternoon.

Carolyn Ashworth, France class teacher, said: “The wedding was a fantastic event.

“Thank you to Reverend Cook for supporting us with the preparations, conducting the service and making us feel so welcome in church.”
