STAFF and pupils from a Hawkshaw school have been celebrating top marks after an official inspection.

Monitors from education watchdog Ofsted visited St Mary's C of E Primary School on February 24 and 25 and judged it 'outstanding'.

It was last inspected in 2009 when it was graded as 'good'.

Lead inspector Andree Coleman said in her report: "Pupils make outstanding progress and reach above average standards by the end of each key stage.

"Disadvantaged pupils are exceptionally well supported and achieved at least as well as other pupils in school. Some attain higher standards than their peers.

"The quality of teaching is outstanding. Children in the early years settle in well and make excellent progress."

Mr Coleman also praised the school for teaching a rich curriculum and for helping children learn musical instruments.

He praised headteacher Geraldine Woodward as "uncompromising in her ambition to ensure all pupils have the best possible education."

Governors were said to be "excellent".

Ms Woodward said: "The staff and governors have worked relentlessly to achieve this outstanding outcome.

"We are blessed to have such wonderful children and supportive parents.

"Everybody in the St Mary's community is delighted with the outstanding judgement.

"I couldn't feel more proud of our team achievement."

The school's chairman of governors, Mags Wilcock, said: "On behalf of all St Mary's governors, I would like to add our thanks to Geraldine, staff and pupils for these outstanding achievements.

"We feel so proud of our wonderful school community."

Inspectors have challenged the school to keep standards high by ensuring pupils have regular opportunities to respond to teachers' marking and guidance.

They also want pupils to ensure their handwriting and presentation of work is of the same high quality in all classes.
