CADETS at Bury Grammar School were inspected by a celebrated Brigadier, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign.

Brigadier Paul Nanson conducted the Ministry of Defence inspection of the school's Combined Cadet Force (CCF), with more than 200 cadets taking part in a range of activities.

The visit began with a quarter guard welcome for the Brigadier, who serves in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and was awarded the CBE earlier this year for his operational services while in Afghanistan, as well as a display from the Corps of Drums.

The cadets then completed a range of training, including first aid, camouflage and concealment, observation, building shelters, and map reading.

Brigadier Nanson also talked with the cadets about their experiences, and senior cadets concluded the day with a demonstration of a section attack.

Major Bob Rylance, a member of staff at the school said: "The CCF at Bury Grammar School have worked incredibly hard over the last six months to prepare for this inspection.

"The cadets did really well on the day and demonstrated how young people respond well to the opportunities to display their leadership potential."

Brigadier Nanson joined the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in 1986, and has been deployed in Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe, the Persian Gulf and Germany.

In 1996, he was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service for services in Bosnia, and then in 2002 he was awarded the MBE for time as Chief of Staff of the 102 Logistics brigade.

He said: "The CCF has a long standing history at the Bury Grammar Schools, and is very much a part of the fabric of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

"It has been a privilege to meet the students and, as in my past visits to the school, I have been enormously impressed by their dedication and enthusiasm."
