SCOTTISH Water has been fined £5000 after a sewage leak into Moodiesburn's Bothlin Burn.
The water company admitted responsibility after the burn was polluted with plastic and food waste.
Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday heard how Scottish Water had failed to repair a blocked sewage pipe, leading to the leak.
The incident, last February, was investigated by environment agency SEPA when a member of the public called its pollution hotline.
SEPA officers described how they found sewage fungus and large amounts of waste on the river bed.
SEPA bosses said the leak could have poisoned fish and local wildlife. Investigating officer Mark Boyle said: "The ecology and the amenity of the watercourse were adversely affected by this discharge."
