CONCERNED residents in Radcliffe have hit out at inconsiderate drivers who have been caught parking their cars fully on the pavement.

Pictures taken in Ringley Road West show a number of vehicles blocking the path, which has meant pedestrians are forced to walk in the road.

Campaigners have highlighted the particular risk to children and wheelchair users, who are left unable to see oncoming traffic.

Karen Turner-Riley, of nearby Chapeltown Road, has petitioned for years to stop neighbours parking on the pavement so that her daughter Emily, who suffers from cerebral palsy and visual impairment, could get past in her wheelchair.

She said: “We campaigned for ages to get people to stop parking on the pavement but it took a long, long time for anything to change.

“We know very well the dangers parking like this can cause.

“Emily’s biggest issue when she was using her wheelchair on her own was getting past cars and often she had to go into the road or would just get completely stuck.”

Emily last year became the first person in the region to complete a scheme which assists disabled youngsters to use public transport alone, but found that getting to the top of her street was the hardest part of the journey.

Mrs Turner-Riley added: “If you are the height of a child or of someone in a wheelchair then the cars will block your view of the road completely.

“It’s even worse when it’s dark, especially because the speed people drive at along these roads is very dangerous.”

Tracey Snelling, who took the photos, said she sees cars parked in this way every day but nothing has been done to stop them.

“This has been going on for quite a long time,” she said.

“I have dogs and we have to walk along the road when we go past, but I’ve seen kids and mums with prams having to do the same thing. It’s dangerous.

“If it’s only a one-off sort of thing then you can forgive it, but this is every day.”
