BENEFITS changes could be the reason a charity handed out more food to vulnerable people than ever before last year.

Porch Boxes delivered 4,733 crisis packs in 2014 – the highest figure in its history.

The charity, based at Bridge Methodist Church in Milltown Street, Radcliffe, takes orders from referral agencies, which then deliver the items to needy families and individuals across the borough and also in Bolton, Oldham and Rochdale.

Charity bosses say there had been a noticeable increase in families who needed help due to problems with the benefits system.

In 2014, 35 per cent of people needed food packs due to benefits sanctions, suspensions or disallowances.

Another 20 per cent required assistance due to delays in establishing benefits because of changes in circumstances and accommodation, or because of appeals.

In her annual statement, Julia Rowlands, chairman of Porch Boxes, said: “Many agencies are reporting increased need for boxes due to their own budgets, and there has been a noticeable increase in families with increased need due to problems with the benefits system.

“However, many people are unable to access help as they do not have key workers to support them.

“These are challenging times, and the need for help and support is increasing.”

Porch Boxes provides emergency packs of non-perishable food and toiletries which are designed to last two years.
