A MOTHER whose son survived a blood clot on his brain has raised more than £1,000 for the hospital that saved his life.

Kelly Porter, 33, of Calder Crescent, Whitefield, ran the Manchester Marathon on Sunday to raise money for Manchester Royal Infirmary, where her son Dylan, aged 11, was cared for when he suffered mastoiditis in January last year.

Dylan, who was 10 at the time, complained of severe earache before he was admitted to hospital suffering from the condition – an aggressive bacterial infection that affects the mastoid bone behind the ear.

The episode started with a simple ear infection, spreading to his mastoid bone, and resulted in a blood clot on his brain.

Fluid began to build up behind his optic nerve, causing pressure which meant he needed several injections to relieve it.

Doctors were reluctant to operate on Dylan’s mastoid bone, but after five weeks, a mastiodectomy was carried out in his right ear to clear out the infection and insert a drainage tube to help with liquid behind his eye.

Dylan, who was left blinded in one eye during his time in hospital, was awarded a bravery award at his school of the time, Hollins Grundy Primary School in Bury.

Kelly’s dad, Glenn Williams, who supported her throughout her training for the marathon, said: “Last year, for the best part of two months, Dylan was in hospital being treated for the infection.

“Originally he was complaining of pain and we thought he had a nasty ear infection but it turned out to be a blood clot on his brain.

“Kelly vowed she would pay everyone back who cared for Dylan and saved his life and that’s why she decided to run the marathon for Manchester Royal.”

The mother-of-three, who has only ever run half marathons before, completed the 26-mile run in three hours and 46 minutes.

“Dylan is amazed by his mum, she is wonderful. She would get up at half five every morning to train for the marathon while juggling looking after her children,” added Mr Williams.

Waiting at the finish line were a number of Kelly’s family members including her dad, husband Craig, aged 33, Dylan and his five-year-old brother Harley.

Daughter Francesca, aged 18 months, was being cared for by grandmother Wendy Williams and the whole family enjoyed a celebratory meal to end the day.
