COFFEE, cakes and a whole lot of prizes went down a treat at social afternoon in Whitefield.

Ladies from Stand Unitarian Chapel held a coffee morning and afternoon at the Ringley Road church on May 6 and raised £1,313 for The Christie in Manchester.

More than 90 people attended, including Bury Mayor, Cllr Michelle Wiseman, and the highlight of the day was a grand raffle, offering prizes such as flower arrangements, planters, restaurant vouchers and wine.

The annual event was first held in 1956 and volunteers have now raised more than £49,000 for The Christie over the years.

The group also holds one-off collections at Morrisons supermarket in Whitefield, and has collection boxes in 12 local businesses.

Organiser Eileen Ormerod said: "Though the weather was not very good and it may have put some people off, the turnout was very good and the day went splendidly well.

"We were very pleased with the total raised."

Mrs Ormerod added: "The last fund we contributed to was for the hospital to buy a specialist gamma camera and now our money is going towards researching proton beam therapy, as the hospital is set to get a proton beam machine in 2018."
