STREETS in Holcombe could be enforced with 20mph limits and speed humps in efforts by the council to calm traffic.

Plans have been put forward to introduce the speed limits in roads around the Holcombe Brook East area, including Newcombe Road, Peel Hall Road, Waterside Road, Railway Street, Mayfield Road and Summerseat Lane.

Residents have the opportunity to raise their objections against the plans until June 8 when the consultation period ends.

Speed humps are set to be installed on all of the roads although 20mph limits will only be placed in Newcombe Road, Waterside Road, Railway Street and Summerseat Lane.

Dr Falmai Binns, chairman of Bury Rural Inequalities Forum, said: “We have run a 10-year campaign to get Holcombe’s traffic calmed.

“There is ample evidence that the main road is dangerous with regard to speeding .

“The police ran a community speed-watch event with Emmanuel Holcombe Primary School the other week using the children to talk to errant speeding motorists.

“However, we are not sure that having a 20mph is the final solution as this is so easily ignored.”

A spokesman for Bury Council said: “The council continues to promote its StreetSafe initiative which includes a programme of schemes designed to reduce the legal speed limit to 20mph on streets within residential estates and areas.

“A proposed scheme for the Holcombe Brook East area is currently the subject of a notice, which was published on May 14, which gives residents and other road users the opportunity to raise formal objections to the proposals should they wish to do so.

“The Holcombe Brook East area includes Newcombe Road, Summerseat Lane, Railway Street, Waterside Road and all the adjoining residential estates.

“Although the scheme is being considered for potential implementation in the current financial year, a programme of works will not be determined until any formal objections received have been considered.”

An informal consultation was previously carried out among residents and the results were reported and are available to view at www.tinyurl.com/burycouncilresults
