BURY schoolgirl Scarlett Berry is hoping her annual dog show will be the biggest yet this weekend.

The Bury Grammar pupil raised more than £1,000 at last year’s show for Bolton Destitute Animal Shelter, and Dogs Trust Merseyside.

Scarlett, aged 11, will be hosting her third Barking Berry’s charity fun day in Central Park, Westhoughton, on Saturday (June 6) and hopes to raise even more money for Homeless Hounds and Dogs Trust Merseyside.

The youngster, who lives in Westhoughton, started supporting animal rescue charities when she was eight by selling homemade dog biscuits and donating the profits.

There will be 15 canine show classes on the day, judged by veterinary nurse Gemma Yates from Darley House Vet Centre in Farnworth, while pet dogs can also take advantage of flyball and agility games.

The categories are: best child handler, cutest pup (12 months and under), glossiest coat, prettiest bitch, waggiest tail, most handsome dog, best smile, best senior (seven years and over), best ears, best ex-pound dog, barkiest dog, best rescue, dog most like its owner, best fancy dress, and best in show.

The show classes will cost £1 to enter on the day

“We did really well last year despite terrible weather,” said Scarlett.

“This year we are hoping for sunshine and an even better turnout.

“We want to raise lots of money for all of the rescues coming along, but the most important thing is to let people know that you don't need to go to a breeder to buy a dog.

"There are so many lovely dogs in rescues all over the country waiting for their forever homes.”

Bungee trampolines, archery sessions and a bouncy castle along with pasties, homemade cakes and ice cream will be on offer to keep visitors entertained.

About 50 stalls will be at the fun day, which runs from 11am to 4pm.
