GREEN-FINGERED tenants are being given the chance to show off their gardening skills with the return of an annual competition.

Six Town Housing has announced the return of the contest, where prizes are awarded for the best gardens across the borough.

Judges are looking for eye-catching gardens and hanging baskets belonging to tenants that live in the 7,784 council properties managed by Six Town.

The categories are: best individual garden; best young gardener; most improved garden; best pots and baskets; contribution to the community; best use of space; best communal garden; and best edible garden.

John Merrick, Director of Neighbourhoods at Six Town Housing, said: “Past competitions have shown that many of our tenants show great pride in their gardens, which helps make their neighbourhood brighter for everyone.

"We are always impressed by the effort that entrants put in and are really excited to see this year’s displays.”

Entrants must live in a property managed by Six Town Housing, but people can nominate the gardens of other tenants.

Last year's competition attracted more than 80 entries.

Councillor Rishi Shori, Deputy Leader of Bury Council, said: “The competition encourages tenants to create great looking gardens that can be appreciated by all who live on or pass through their estate.”

Nomination forms are available online at www.sixtownhousing.org or can be picked up from Six Town Housing Reception or local libraries and community centres. The closing date for entries is Friday July 10.

* Tenants are also being encouraged to enter their gardens for the council's Bury in Bloom competition, with entries open until Friday July 17.

The four categories for Bury in Bloom are: best household front garden; best street or community garden; best commercial or retail display or landscaping; and best school environmental education garden.

Judges will consider the overall design, benefits to wildlife, recycling, and sustainability.
