A REDVALES councillor is making waves for charity by taking part in the Great Manchester Swim.

Judith Kelly is raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society by taking on the one-mile swim in Salford Quays this Saturday (July 4) alongside friend Catherine Thorley, a cancer survivor swimming in aid of The Christie hospital.

The pair met via Twitter while training for event, and have already raised more than £700 combined for their chosen charities.

Cllr Kelly, who trains at The Bolholt Hotel in Walshaw, said: "I have an annual fundraiser for The MS Society - Wine Time - where money is raised while having a party. This year I wanted to also do something different, an added extra.

“I’d also always wanted a wetsuit. I can swim a mile in a pool but I don't really like water and won't even go in the sea when I'm on holiday.

“I’m absolutely terrified. At least I have been in the canal now so I know what it’s like, but I have never done anything like this before."

On her link-up with Catherine, she added: “We are helping each other out and providing moral support as much as anything else.

“We have got two great charities to support and hopefully we can raise a good amount of money.”

Catherine, of David Street, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and, now that she has recovered, is eager to give back to the hospital that helped save her life.

The 41-year-old childminder added: “Now I'm in good health I want to give something back.

“I have a massive fear of open water although I'm a confident swimmer so it's a big challenge mentally.

“I also have some muscle damage to my chest and arm so physically it's a challenge too".
