HUNDREDS of bonsai lovers from across the world are set to flock to Bury for a major exhibition in October.

Although British growers of the Japanese miniature tree-pruning art form are renowned for doing well in international competitions, there has not been a major show in the UK since 1999.

Bonsai crafter and competition judge Tony Tickle has decided to change all that — and has chosen the 800-capacity Castle Armoury in Cooper Street, Bury, to stage the show called Bonsai Europa 2015.

Mr Tickle, aged 59, from Ramsbottom, has arranged for some of the world's best bonsai exhibitors and teachers to attend.

One of the trees, which will come from Japan, has been dubbed "priceless" by Mr Tickle and is admired so much that it has its own bodyguard.

He said: "I have organised bonsai events before and have had 2,500 visitors on just a single day.

"People will be coming from across Europe, China, North America and elsewhere and the exhibitors are coming from across the world too. The town's hotels will be full."

One of those attending will be Craig Coussins, who has been teaching bonsai skills since 1971.

The Glaswegian said: "The venue will be full.

“Many bonsai enthusiasts from around the world love to visit Britain because English is their second language and they know they can come to the exhibition and see other attractions, such as Manchester and Yorkshire, while they are there.

"The art form is all about creating the illusion of a full-sized tree in miniature form and there are 150,000 people in the UK who practise Bonsai.

"Events like this give them a chance to get together with like-minded people, to learn new techniques and to buy things to help them.

"If it's a hit, it could be held every two years in Bury."

Mr Tickle added: "We've got a coach party coming from Germany and many other visitors and everyone who I have spoken to is looking forward to seeing what Bury has to offer.

"The venue is very good. It's a great space and a chance for the exhibitors to show off their very special trees. I'm proud to be holding this in Bury."
