KEEPING the wheels of a community-minded social group turning for 50 years has proved to be a piece of cake for one group of smiling ladies.

Members of Prestwich and Whitefield Inner Wheel Club marked the branch's 50th birthday with a celebration evening on June 30 at Fairways Lodge in George Street, Prestwich, with more than 90 supporters attending

The group aims to bring together women from the area and allows them a chance to hold events, , such as cake sales and scarf-knitting sessions, to raise money for good causes.

It is affiliated to a nationwide organisation which has branches across the UK.

At the anniversary evening, guests were treated to a meal, a slice of cake and a performance of show tunes from singers Nicola Fox, Janet Moody and Antoinetta Pelosi.

It was announced that Betty Heyworth would remain as branch president for another 12 months and her chosen cause will continue to be Bury Hospice.

Mrs Heyworth said: "It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We wanted it to be a lively celebration and that is exactly what it was.

"We were delighted to welcome guests from other branches and it made for a lovely night."

The branch will hold a meeting later this month to discuss what activities members will organise in the next 12 months.
