CHILDREN at a Ramsbottom school were left "spooked" and inspired when a popular author visited.

Joseph Delaney, author of the Spook's series, a string of science fiction and fantasy stories, visited year seven pupils at Woodhey High School.

Mr Delaney, an ex-English teacher, came to the school to speak about his books and his new novel 'Arena 13', which was actually a rewrite of his first attempt at a novel in 1991.

During his visit to the school in Bolton Road West., Mr Delaney read excerpts from various books, discussed the film adaptation of 'The Spook's Apprentice, Seventh Son', and how he got into writing.

English teacher Stephen Grindrod, who organised the visit, said: "The day was a huge success. It's so exciting to have Joseph talk to the pupils about being an author.

“I think the experience of meeting an author brings reading and literature to life and shows people that authors are not just a name on the front of a book. Everyone really enjoyed it."

He answered questions from the pupils regarding how he creates characters, the re-drafting and editing process, and his own favourite author, J R R Tolkien.

Pupil Miranda Clitheroe-Warman said: "When Mr Grindrod said Joseph was coming in to school, I was very excited as I think he's a great author.

“It was very interesting when he explained how he became a writer because I would like to be an author like him.

“I found it fascinating when he told us where he found the inspiration for the Spook's Apprentice and Arena 13.

“It gave me ideas on how to research my own stories."

Many of the pupils bought books afterwards and had them signed.
