TWO businesses are hoping for an end to their fly-tipping nightmare after spending hundreds of pounds removing rubbish from their land.

Glass manufacturers Coloured Glass and flooring firm Walmersley Carpets have both seen their premises, in Geoffrey Street, repeatedly targeted by fly-tippers.

They have been forced to fork out their own money to remove the rubbish – which has included furniture, food, and kitchen appliances – and are fed up with the mess.

Alan Moores, who owns Coloured Glass, said: “It has been a nightmare for us. It’s costing us money that we can’t really afford and time that we should be spending producing products.

“I don’t understand how people could do this. I love the place where I live and I wouldn’t dream of doing something like this.

“We have done three big removals, including hiring a skip last year which cost £240.

"We have really noticed how bad this has become in the last six months or so.

“All sorts of rubbish gets left here – settees, mattresses, industrial panels, and just about everything else you can think of.

“There is even food dumped here sometimes, which is a complete nightmare because of the rats it attracts.”

The businesses are hoping that making the area more attractive will deter people from dumping their rubbish on the premises.

He added: “We have strimmed the plants in the area and we are thinking of putting some benches down to make it obvious to people that they shouldn’t be dumping their rubbish there.

“If it looks like a more attractive bit of land then maybe whoever is doing this will be less inclined to ruin it.”

A spokesman for Walmersley Carpets said: “The council say they can’t do anything about it because it’s private land, but unfortunately for us it’s private land that anyone can access.

“It’s an eyesore, a health and safety hazard, and a fire hazard. The rubbish gets left there and it’s then down to us to take it to the tip and be charged hundreds of pounds for the pleasure.

“Something more needs to be done to track down whoever is responsible.

“We aren’t the ones responsible for this, yet we have to clean it up. At one point we had 50 tyres and 20 fridges dumped overnight.”
