ASDA has celebrated its 50th anniversary by providing a "gateway" to funding which has benefited a Bury charity to the tune of £3,700.

That's the amount of money which has been awarded to Bury Gateway which offers the opportunity for people with learning disabilities to meet socially and to develop friendships.

The funding will allow the charity to buy five tablet computers.

To mark its 50th year, the Asda Foundation has given away £50,000 in grants across the UK.

Elizabeth Seymour, community life champion at the Asda store in Spring Street, Bury, explained: "Our bid was won by Bury Gateway who successfully applied for £3,700 to buy tablet computers to allow their service users to learn how to navigate the internet and acquire new skills in information technology."

At the cheque presentation, held at the charity's base at the Mosses Centre, Bury Gateway's project manager Maria Butterworth was recognised for her commitment to a group which has been running for 33 years.

Miss Seymour said: "We decided to celebrate Maria for her tireless work in the community, ensuring that Gateway continues to run and support people from Bury with a disability. Maria was presented with flowers and chocolates from our colleagues and received special thanks from our store manager and community champion."

Mrs Butterworth said: "We had applied to Asda for the amount we received and we were very fortunate. The tablets will be used by staff and service users. I am full-time and we also have a part-time administrator. We have around 17 volunteers and more than 100 service users."

She added: "Asda have been so supportive because they know every penny counts within our charity and they do as much as they can to help us, especially during our fundraising events."
