A YOUTH project in Ramsbottom has scooped a £1,930 grant after being picked from hundreds of community groups in Greater Manchester.

Ramsbottom Young People’s Project was awarded the cash from the Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner Youth Aspiration Fund to provide activities in the town.

Peter Cooper, secretary of Ramsbottom Young People’s Project, said: “It was a very competitive application process so we are really pleased to have got a slice of this funding in Bury, and we were well supported by the Ramsbottom Neighbourhood Policing Team.

“We found out on the last day of term so we missed an opportunity to spread the news through school.

"We're excited to have been awarded the grant which is going to enable us to provide even more activities for the young people in our town."

The group, which formed in 2013, is run entirely by volunteers to provide free activities to young people aged between 13 and 16 in Ramsbottom.

Ramsbottom Police Sergeant Angela Freudenberger said: "Greater Manchester Police are delighted that Ramsbottom Young People's Project were awarded with £1,930 to spend on youth activities in the next year.

"We fully supported and assisted the project as we want to work closely with partner agencies in connection with tackling anti-social behaviour.

"It is of great importance to intervene at an early stage as it is difficult to break the cycle once there is a pattern of behaviour.

"Local schools and police will work together to identify the areas where anti social behaviour is and develop an appropriate strategy."

Mr Cooper is appealing for volunteers to help with the running of activities and said: “We would love to hear from anyone interested in helping out.”

A Friday night trip is organised every week and so far the group has been rollerblading and rock climbing. Teenagers are encouraged to suggest ideas of places to visit.
