WHEN a festival needs an anthem and a sing-along to round off a weekend of family friendly fun, look no further than The Proclaimers.

The Reid twins, backed by a live band, deliver hit after hit, delving through the rich back catalogue they have created since they formed the band more than three decades ago.

First up is Letter from America, which reached number three in the singles chart back in 1987, followed by Sunshine on Leith, a love letter to their hometown in Scotland, which also formed the basis of a feature film of the same name in 2013.

I’m On My Way, which was used in the soundtrack to the original Shrek film, draws the first major sing-along of the night, but it is not until the end of the band’s hour long set when the place goes up.

Some bands would regard the huge success of a single such as I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) as an albatross, such as Radiohead who refused to play Creep for long spells of their career.

But the Reids don’t mind, and why would they?

The song has taken on a life of its own over the years, and has propelled the duo, once seen as a novelty act, firmly into the pop mainstream.

Charlie and Craig are not showmen and they do not engage with the audience much, but as a successful DIY advertising campaign once said, the band does what it says on the tin.

Their songs do the talking, rather than any pyrotechnics, lighting or other gimmicks.

Hit after hit, interspersed with cuts from the band’s latest tenth album, Let’s Hear it for the Dogs, it is the perfect end to a festival which continues to go from strength to strength.

Even a bit of Ramsbottom rain did not manage to dampen the spirits of the hardy audience!
