HUNDREDS of history fans have been learning about two of Prestwich's grandest buildings.

As part of National Heritage Weekend, St Mary's Church in Church Lane and St Hilda's Church in Whittaker Lane opened up to the public on September 12 and 13 with some fascinating results.

At St Hilda's, dozens of visitors took advantage of the presence of thousands of local records and delved into their family history.

Joe Walk, a member of the church's parochial council, said: "It was wonderful to see so many people coming to the church and showing such curiosity.

"A lot of people were looking into their own heritage and searching for the christenings, weddings and funerals of past generations of their families. They found it very insightful."

He added: "It was a really big success and we are so glad that we took part in National Heritage Weekend.

"We are going to have a meeting to decide if we should repeat the exercise again next year and I would imagine the answer will be 'yes'."

At St Mary's, visitors ventured up to the top of the tower and enjoyed views across the whole of Prestwich and beyond.

One of those who took a trip to the Grade One listed church was James Barber, aged 54, from Broughton.

He said: "It is fascinating to think that a church of some description has been there since 1200 and that this building has been there at least in part since the 16th century.

"It is a wonderful building of which Prestwich should feel proud.

"These weekends are great for attracting history and architecture enthusiasts to the church who perhaps would not want to attend a Sunday service."
