A WHITEFIELD woman will be striding out in front of a television audience of millions on Sunday, after joining Countryfile presenter Matt Baker on a sponsored ramble.

Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) walking co-ordinator Carragh Teague, whose role includes developing and delivering a programme of walking schemes, was chosen to join Matt along with 23 other walkers in Countryfile’s Ramble for Children In Need.

Carragh, a fan of the programme, raised £126 for Children In Need by taking part, and climbed a mountain 917 metres high as part of the walk in Snowdonia’s Ogwen Valley.

Each of the Countryfile presenter-led walks, which took place over a recent weekend, involved walking with a young person who had benefited in the past from charities funded by Children In Need.

On Carragh’s walk, this featured a girl with severe visual impairments, who completed the walk over 10 hours despite the difficult mountain terrain, to raise money for Children In Need and to inspire other young people.

As TfGM’s walking co-ordinator, raising money by walking was the perfect choice for Carragh.

She explained: "I’m passionate about walking because, regardless of your age or where you live, walking is for everyone, everywhere, every day. It’s one of the most fundamental activities of daily life, and one of the best indications of real life in a city is to measure its walking.

“At TfGM, I’m responsible for developing and delivering a programme of walking schemes including structured health walks, led and self-guided recreational walks and schemes that promote everyday walking, especially for commuting.

“I’m also a massive Countryfile fan, so it was great to be able to join Matt Baker’s walk and raise money for charity at the same time.”

The programme will be screened at 6pm on BBC1.
