HUNDREDS of people are set to join parades and attend church services across Prestwich and Whitefield on Remembrance Sunday.

Various events have been organised to allow residents to pay their respects to people who gave their lives in the two World Wars and other conflicts.

Despite restoration work being carried out on Whitefield War Memorial - at the junction of Higher Lane and Church Lane - with the aid of a £26,000 grant from the War Memorials Trust, scaffolding is expected to be removed in time for Sunday.

There will be a remembrance ceremony at the memorial starting at 11am and this will include a rededication of the memorial.

Beforehand, a church service will take place at the adjacent All Saints Church, starting at 10am and ending at around 10.45am.

The Rev Alison Hardy will lead both services and dignitaries and representatives of scouts, cubs, brownies, guides, Bury Council and present and former ex-servicemen and women are due to attend.

In Prestwich, Besses Boys’ Band, now based in Simister, will lead a march of remembrance that will start at the Royal British Legion on the corner of Bury Old Road and Upper Wilton Street.

The parade will include representatives of the Association of Jewish Ex Servicemen and Women, local councillors, scouts, brownies and armed Forces veterans.

The march will form at 10am and set off at around 10.15am en route to Prestwich War Memorial in Rectory Lane in time for a wreath-laying service at 11am.

At St Mary’s Church in Church Lane, Prestwich, Reverend Chris Wedge will lead a remembrance service at 10am.

At St Margaret’s Church, Prestwich, there will be an act of remembrance and sung eucharist led by Reverend Deborah Sandercock-Pickles, starting at 9.45am. She will also lead a service at St George’s Church in Simister Lane at 11.15am.
