OPENING his first commercial premises to house his bakery business is the icing on the cake for former student Jon Garrity - after being given the "all clear" from testicular cancer

The 24-year-old Bury man is opening his cake baking company in Simister this weekend, which he originally established in 2013.

And he also has plans to expand his enterprise by operating baking and cake decorating classes by the end of this year or early in 2016.

Jon's Cakes will open its doors at premises in Egypt Lane on Sunday (Nov 22), after previously running his business at his home in Astbury Close, Bury.

He offers a variety of freshly baked wedding cakes, birthday cakes, cupcakes, novelty cakes and treats.

When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 18, he determinedly continued his catering and hospitality course at Bury College, despite the expectations that he would take a break and focus on getting better.

He completed his coursework in bed as he fought extreme tiredness, sickness and blisters on his hands caused by chemotherapy.

His hard work ultimately paid off when he completed his studies with excellent marks and was named Bury College's student of the year. Later, Jon was able to fulfil his goal of setting up his own bakery company.

He explained: "It all started in 2013 when I decided to take up cake decorating for my large family and friends after completing the catering course where here I learnt the basics I needed. All the rest was self taught.

"After getting the all-clear from Christie's, I wanted to push myself as far as I could which helped in the drive of my business. I have now progressed into my first commercial property where I can grow my business and also take classes to teach others who have the same passion for baking."

Visitors are invited to come along to Jon's Cakes in Egypt Lane from 1pm onwards on Sunday.
