A WOMAN who was moving into a new house got more than she bargained for and was forced to call firefighters after discovering a gas leak.

The woman, aged 46, was cleaning the oven at her new home in Brandlesholme Road when she began to smell gas, and decided to call 999.

Firefighters from Bury and Whitefield stations attended at about 7pm on Friday and made the house safe by isolating the gas.

Watch manager Steve Wilcock, from Bury fire station, said: "Thankfully in this case it was a simple matter of isolating the gas, but we have had some serious fires across Greater Manchester after gas leaks have built up over time.

"It is very important for people to get out of the building as soon as possible when there is a gas leak, and the woman did the right thing by calling 999."
