RAIL enthusiasts in Bury have embarked on a second major restoration involving a proud lady of steam.
Since its formation more than 30 years ago, the priority activity of the Bury Standard 4 Group (BS4G) has been to bring back to life a Standard 4 mt locomotive, work on which is expected to be completed next year.
Now, preliminary work has started on a second loco which was bought by the group in 1987. The steam enthusiasts acquired an Ivatt "Mogul" Class mt, built in 1948 and withdrawn in 1966.
Harry Taylor, publicity officer, said: "Loco number 46428 was sent to Woodham's scrap yard in Wales from where it was rescued. She has been stored in the East Lancashire Railway's (ELR) sidings at Buckley Wells awaiting restoration.
"Preliminary work has now started to remove the boiler and separate the frame from the wheels. Loco 46428 will then be moved next to the BS4G workshop at the ELR’s Bolton Street station."
