FOLLOWING news that a Radcliffe takeaway house has been closed down because of a cockroach infestation, we take a look at five nasty things found in people’s food.

Mouse loaf

Bury Times:

“The best thing since sliced bread,” goes the expression. But not this loaf. Stephen Forse, of Kidlington, Oxfordshire found a dead mouse moulded into the corner of a loaf of Hovis Best bread purchased from Tesco online. Hovis parent company, Premier Foods, were fined £5,500 for the incident.

Brush butty

Bury Times: Wire brush found in burger

One of the strangest food finds was made back in 2010, when 18-year-old Brett Stephens noticed a five-inch wire brush poking out of a Chicken Legend sandwich he’d purchased at a McDonald's in Kidderminster. “It was beyond belief,” said mum Janet, while McDonald's asked for the safe return of the brush to pursue investigations.

Maccy D mould

Bury Times:

Closer to home, Gaynor Jarvis complained after spotting green mould on a McDonald's breakfast sandwich in Astley Bridge, Bolton. Perhaps not as shocking as the others on this list, but notable for the excuse she said she received from staff at the time – that “the green mould on the bun was actually blue and most probably had rubbed off from the blue wrapper that it was stored in.”

Frog salad

Bury Times: Frogging a dead horse? The salad bag with its resident

Julia Phillips got a fright as she prepared lunch for her family when she found a live frog in a sealed bag of Asda’s own brand "wild rocket" salad in Roehampton, London. The 49-year-old was handed a £10 shopping voucher for her troubles. "I think it's a bit of an insult really - it's quite a serious thing to find in your food,” she said.

Tinned rat

Bury Times:

Everybody likes beans on toast, right? No, not like this they don’t – served with a dead rat cooked in-tin. The unfortunate creature was found in a tin of baked beans by a man in Brockley, South East London in 2010. Food scientists later said the rodent most likely climbed in during the tinning process and was cooked to death inside. Poor thing.
