BOLTON Hockey Club’s men’s first XI had a mixed weekend, losing 3-0 to Bury first XI before bouncing back with a 7-2 victory over Southport seconds, writes Ed Higgs

Saturday’s defeat began in ominous circumstances, as Bolton started a man down, before Sean McGovern came in from the seconds to deputise.

With Bury having four subs to choose from, they managed to rotate effectively and coasted past a tired Bolton side.

Sunday, however, was a different story, as a Rob Davies hat-trick helped secure an impressive victory over Southport.

Two goals from Joel Reiss, and one apiece from Damien Pearse and Carl Philbin ensured the weekend finished on a winning note.

Bolton men’s second XI followed up last week’s derby win over Horwich with a comfortable 3-0 win over rivals Bury.

The result, which sees them move second in the table, was secured by a Jon Woods hat-trick, including a strike that hit both posts before crossing the line to round off an important victory.

Jenny Brookfield scored seven times as Bolton ladies’ second XI powered to a 14-0 win away at Manchester University.

Intricate link-up play between Brookfield and Gibb in the first five minutes saw both women get on the score sheet and set the tone for a truly dominant display.

Brookfield was allowed to rack up the goals by the strong creative work of her team-mates, including a particularly neat assist from Rachel Dudley.

Manchester Uni emerged determined for the second half, but were no match for the defensive power of Natalie Boal, Jude Gough, Imogen Hall and Nyemh Johnson.

A goal each from Emma Girt and Chloe Frost, as well as two from Fiona Clarke, rounded off the thumping victory for Bolton.
