A WOMAN has died and another is fighting for her life after a double stabbing in Bury.

A murder inquiry is underway by police who were called to Woodward Close, Limefield, just before 5pm on Sunday.

They discovered a 52-year-old and an 80-year-old with life-threatening stab wounds.

The victim has been named locally as Maylyn Couperthwaite.

It is understood the 80-year-old is her mother Audrey Couperthwaite.

They were taken hospital where Maylyn was prounouced dead.

Audrey remains in a life threatening condition.

It is thought the incident is linked to a long-running feud between neighbours.

A 62-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Sara Wallwork of GMP’s Serious Crime Division said: “One of the victims of this shocking incident has now sadly died and we have launched a full murder investigation.

“I know an incident like this can cause a lot of shock within the community but I would like to assure everybody that we have a dedicated team of detectives currently working to investigate the circumstances leading up the stabbing.

“The other victim is currently in hospital undergoing surgery and she remains in a life threatening condition and my thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with these ladies and their loved ones as we investigate what has happened.
