THE candidates for next month's local elections have been revealed.

One-third of the Bury Council’s 51 seats will be decided at this poll, one from each of the 17 wards in the borough, on Thursday, May 5.

The ruling Labour group will be hoping to retain its dominance of the council and will be defending 13 of its 34 seats.

The Conservatives will be aiming to chip away at the Labour stronghold, as well as defending three seats in North Manor, Tottington, and Church ward.

They will also be hoping to reclaim the Pilkington Park seat of former Tory councillor Michelle Wiseman, who became an independent in 2013 and is not standing at this election.

Neither of the two current Liberal Democrat councillors, who both sit in the Holyrood ward, are up for re-election. The party will be contesting 13 seats next month.

The Bury Green Party have put up a candidate in each ward and will be hoping to add to their one seat on the council, which is held by former Labour councillor Daisy Bailey in Radcliffe East.

The party's co-ordinator, Niamh McGarry-Gribbin, is contesting that seat at this election in place of Cllr Bailey, who has recently given birth.

There are also nine UK Independence Party candidates standing and one English Democrat, Stephen Morris, neither of which currently hold a seat on the council.

Residents have until April 18 to register to vote if they haven’t already done so. Anyone who wishes to register should go to gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Voters will need their National Insurance number when they register.

Anyone wishing to register for a postal vote, should call the council’s elections office on 0161 253 5252 or email electionservices@bury.gov.uk by April 19.

Poll cards have been sent to all those who are currently on the electoral register.

Polling stations will be open on Thursday, May 5, from 7am to 10pm.
