Asda booze thief fined 

A SERIAL shoplifter ended up in court after she stole alcohol three times from the same shop.
Sarah Thomas, aged 34, of Teak Street, Bury, stole whiskey from the Bury branch of Asda on September 1 last year before returning on February 24 to steal two bottles of vodka.
Thomas went back again on March 2 and stole two bottles of alcohol.
She was charged and admitted three counts of theft to Bury magistrates on April 1, with the total value of stolen alcohol being £184.
Thomas was ordered to pay £555 in compensation, fines and court costs.

Man attacked woman 

A MAN who attacked a woman has been warned to stay out of trouble for a year.
Mickail Zahoor Khan, aged 20, of East Street, Bury, admitted to Bury magistrates on April 6 that he assaulted a woman in Bury on December 19 last year.
He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £165 court costs.

Man drove under influence of cannabis

A YEAR-long driving ban was the punishment for a man who drove under the influence of cannabis.
Wayne Harwood, aged 28, of Birks Drive, Brandlesholme, admitted to Bury magistrates on April 1 that he drove a Vauxhall Astra in Walmersley Road, Bury, on January 22 having taken the drug.
As well as the ban, Harwood was ordered to pay £349 in fines and court costs.

Drink-driver’s one-year ban

DRINK driving in Radcliffe led a man to appear in court.
Jordan Moore, aged 24, of Labtec Street, Salford, drove a Mercedes Sprinter van in Outwood Road on October 11 last year while over the legal alcohol limit.
He denied the offence to Bury magistrates on December 2 and was found guilty on March 10 after a trial.
At a further hearing last Thursday, Moore was banned from driving for a year and ordered to pay £520 in fines and court costs.

Work order for pub assault

A MAN who attacked a man and a woman in a Radcliffe pub has been sentenced in court.
Kevin Swain, aged 34, of Moss Bank Way, Johnson Fold, Bolton, admitted to Bury magistrates on March 15 that he assaulted Mark McKee and Laura Cook in the New Swan Public House, in Spring Lane, on December 29 last year.
At a further hearing last Thursday, Swain was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and to pay £75 compensation to each of his two victims, plus £310 court costs.
He must also stay away from the New Swan for a year.

Driver banned

A DRINK driver has been banned from the road for 20 months.
Andrew Hawnt, aged 37, of Harvey Street, Elton Fold, Bury, drove a Vauxhall Astra in that street on March 6 while over the legal alcohol limit.
He admitted the offence to Bury magistrates and was also ordered to pay £585 in fines and court costs.

Honey thief sent to prison 

A PROLIFIC thief with a penchant for honey has been jailed for 19 weeks.
Brett Barlow, aged 36, of Rochdale Old Road, Fairfield, stole honey worth £81 the Bury branch of Holland and Barrett on February 17 — and did the same thing again on February 23.
Barlow admitted two counts of theft to Bury magistrates last Thursday and admitted that he committed the offences while subject to a suspended sentence order that he got because he stole a Remington electric razor from TJ Hughes in Bury last September.
Sentencing Barlow, magistrates said the offences were aggravated by the fact that he had a prolific record of shop theft.

Man jailed over officer assault

A MAN who attacked a police officer in Bury has been jailed for five months.
Zeray Gleave, aged 28, of Foleshill Avenue, Manchester, assaulted the PC on December 5, last year.
On the same day, Gleave had been driving a Lexus car in Heywood Old Road, Rochdale, and was pulled over by an officer, though refused to provide a sample of breath.
He appeared before Bury magistrates and admitted driving without insurance and due care and attention, failing to give a breath sample and assaulting a police officer.
At a sentencing hearing on April 1, Gleave was jailed and also ordered to pay £950 in court costs, compensation and fines.

Drug driver banned for year

A RAMSBOTTOM man caught driving under the influence of drugs has been banned from getting behind the wheel for a year.
Adam Welsby, aged 22, of Stanley Street, admitted to Bury magistrates on February 23 that he drove an Audi A3 in Manchester New Road, Middleton, on October 2 last year, while under the influence of cannabis.
At a sentencing hearing on April 1, Welsby was given the ban and also ordered to do 60 hours of unpaid work and to pay £260 court costs.

Man admits drink driving 

DRIVING under the influence of alcohol landed a Bury man in court.
Robert Roy Moore, aged 32, of Walmersley Road, Bury, drove a Daewoo in Croft Lane, Bury, on March 4, while over the legal alcohol limit.
He admitted the offence, along with driving without insurance and a licence, to Bury magistrates on April 1 and was banned from driving for 14 months.
Moore must also pay £290 in fines and court costs.

Benefit cheat spared jail 

A BENEFIT cheat has been spared jail.
Pauline Walsh, aged 43, of Victoria Avenue, Whitefield, admitted to Bury magistrates on April 5 that she made a dishonest statement to the Government on November 4, 2013, and was able to claim employment and support allowance that she was not entitled to.
She also admitted failing to alert the Government about a change in her circumstances that affected her entitlement for income support, between July 2011 and October 2013.
Walsh failed to say she was living with Cole Milburn in a common household.
Magistrates gave her a nine-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and Walsh had falsely claimed a significant amount of money over a long period of time. She must pay £165 court costs.

Woman steals Topshop outfit

A DAY out in Bury left a Rochdale woman with clothes and shoes worth £303, with one slight hitch — it was all stolen.
Alex Kirsten Wood, aged 24, of Broad Lane, Rochdale, admitted to Bury magistrates on April 1 that she had travelled to Bury on January 14 and stole the items from Topshop and River Island, in Bury town centre.
She was caught with a foil-lined bag, used by thieves to evade stolen-item detectors at the entrances of shops.
Wood was ordered to pay £225 in fines and court costs. All the goods were recovered.

Drink-driver had baby in car

April Lutener, aged 28, of Heywood Road, Prestwich, drove an Audi A1 in Kenilworth Road, Whitefield, on February 24 while over the legal alcohol limit.
She admitted that offence, and another charge of being drunk in Kenilworth Road while having the charge of a child under the age of seven years, also on February 24.
At a sentencing hearing at Bury Magistrates Court on April 4, magistrates said the offences were so serious because Lutener had a high level of alcohol in her system and had put a baby in an insecure seat in the car — and an accident occurred.
Lutener was given an eight-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months, banned from driving for three years, ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and told to pay £165 court costs.

Shoplifter given curfew

A SERIAL shoplifter has been given a curfew after offending again.
Michael Gilligan, aged 43, of Tennyson Avenue, Goshen, stole Gillette razor blades worth £120 from a branch of Boots in Manchester on February 27 last year and was given a conditional discharge by Bury magistrates the following month.
On March 2 this year, Gilligan breached the terms of that conditional discharge when he stole items worth £126 from Tesco in Bury.
He admitted theft to Bury magistrates on April 1 and was ordered to stay home from 9pm to 7am daily until May 26 and to pay a £60 victim surcharge.

Sentence for assault

A PRESTWICH man has been given a curfew after admitting assault.
John Michael Moore, aged 35, of Roman Road, admitted to Bury magistrates on March 26 that he assaulted a woman in Radcliffe on March 24.
At a further hearing on April 6, Moore was told to stay home from 8pm to 8am daily until May 4. He must also pay £145 court costs.
The victim told the court that she did not wish the bench to make an order for a compensation payment to be made.
