NEW Year’s Eve celebrations turned sour for one reveller – who has been jailed for 12 weeks for causing a scuffle in a restaurant.

Aaron Iain Law went for a meal at Carmelo’s in Chapel Street, Tottington, to ring in the new year, but fellow diners began to complain about him as he "became boisterous and started swearing loudly" at about 10.30pm, staff said.

According to staff, Law, of Birch Avenue, Tottington, demanded to speak to the manager Carmelo Bilardi and then got into an argument that led to a scuffle and staff having to restrain him on the floor in front of starled customers.

The 30 year old was kicked out of the restaurant – only to return moments later to smash a window.

Police spotted the incident and Law assaulted Detective Constable Matt Marquis, causing an injury to the officer.

Law appeared before Bury magistrates on April 26 and admitted threatening behaviour, assaulting a police officer and criminal damage.

Magistrates said the offences were so serious because of the degree of violence used, the fact that alcohol was involved and because he had returned to the scene.

In relation to the same incident, another man, Jack Law, aged 19, of Harwood Walk, Bury, admitted threatening behaviour and was given a six-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work.

Magistrates said his actions had caused people to fear for their safety.

The defendants must each pay Det Con Marquis £200 compensation.

After the hearing, Mr Bilardi welcomed the fact that Aaron Law has to pay him £200 to repair the window, but said the sentence could have perhaps been longer.

He said: “We are a long-established family company and my son and daughter were there when this incident happened.

“There were other diners with children near this man and it unsettled them on a special occasion.

“To be honest, the woman who was with Aaron Law was very polite, but for some reason, he seemed very drunk and was swearing and being loud.

"We had to board up the window and keep it boarded up for a couple of days.

"My priority will also be the safety and wellbeing of my staff and customers."
