FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning after a woman was hospitalised with burns to her hands suffered during a kitchen fire.

The 57-year-old was injured after some oil she was heating in a wok caught fire and she tried to carry the pan out of the house.

Fire crews from Bury attended the scene in Royal Avenue at 1.15pm this afternoon, and also treated the woman for smoke inhalation before she was taken to Fairfield Hospital.

Watch manager Steve Wilcock said: “Someone was cooking and the oil they had in a wok set on fire. The flames went up and set fire to the hob. The woman had been distracted and she then carried the pan out of the back door and burned her hands in the process.

“We put the fire out and treated her for smoke inhalation and for the burns to her hands, which had taken the skin off, and she was taken to Fairfield Hospital.

“If you are busy doing other things while you cook, then fires can start. At least she didn’t throw water over it, but she shouldn’t have picked the pan up.

“If you call the fire service when the fire is still small then the damage can be minimised. You can also throw a damp towel over the fire, but never water as that will go underneath the oil and create more smoke.”
