HUNDREDS of runners braved the wet weather to be a part of Bury’s first ever Colour Run.

More than 350 people took part in the 5k event, in which they were splattered with brightly-coloured powdered paint, at Burrs Country Park on Sunday afternoon, in aid of Bury Hospice.

Organisers have hailed the run as a huge success and expect it will have raised in excess of £10,000 once the final count is completed.

Suzanne Carr, the hospice’s interim general manager, said: “It is really marvellous. The hospice is in its renaissance and the fact that so many people have come here to support us is truly brilliant.

“It takes a lot of effort to put on an event like this and all staff and volunteers have really pulled together.

“The idea came about because we had seen the Colour Run done elsewhere and thought straight away that it would be something we can do to raise money.

“They have worked really hard to find out how the run works and how to put it together, but using their own initiative they have been able to pull it off.”

Hospice bosses also praised participants for embracing the spirit of the race and for leaving the park in a clean state afterwards.

Former world champion boxer Scott Quigg, who attended the run as a patron of the hospice, added: “This is the first big fundraising event I have been to since I became a patron and I am really happy to be here showing my support, along with all of the hundreds of runners.

“The turnout is fantastic and the people who deserve the credit are the hospice staff and volunteers. They have worked really hard on this and events like this would not be possible without them.”

Lorraine Hamer and her daughter, Olivia, from Bromley Cross, were two of the first people over the finishing line and enjoyed the atmosphere on the course.

She said: “It has been a really fun day. I think the paint and the whole feeling around the run helps you to carry on and put it an extra bit of effort.

“I have done the Race for Life and the Great Manchester Run before, but this is the first time I have done anything like this and I really enjoyed it.”
