DEVELOPERS have been given the green light to build 57 apartments in Ramsbottom, as long as they stick to conditions.

At a town-hall meeting on Tuesday night, Bury planning committee gave Gladman Care Homes permission to demolition buildings in Factory Street and build assisted-living flats for those aged 65-years and over.

Three neighbours formally objected to the plans on grounds of traffic as well as support including improving the area and bringing money into the area.

Writing to the committee, Anna Allsop, of Stubbins Lane, said: "Just 29 car-parking spaces is woefully inadequate and will only increase pressure, stress and inconvenience on already overcrowded surrounding residential streets."

At the meeting, committee member Cllr Yvonne Wright said: "I am for this in principle, I just wish it was all stone. I generally welcome the scheme."

Permission was granted on the condition that Gladman Care Homes spend £50,000 on a scheme to help the environment, public art or leisure activities nearby. Such a scheme must be approved by Bury Council.

The council's highways bosses told the committee they had no objection to the proposal but wanted the firm to draw up a construction management plan and measures to prevent mud from

passing onto the road and to improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
